Jeep Wrangler Takes Off-Roading to the Next Level with Innovative Tent and Trailer Patents

• Stellantis just filed two new patents, aligning Jeep to its off-road character.
• The first patent enables the Jeep Wrangler to wear a rooftop tent directly to its shell.
• The second patent highlights a Jeep-exclusive, off-road-capable trailer design with a similar suspension system to that of the towing Jeep.

Recently, Stellantis has applied for two new patents, both aligning the Jeep brand to its off-road demeanor. The first patent suggests a rooftop tent, designed exclusively for the Jeep Wrangler. Whereas the second patent is related to an off-road capable trailer, built by using the standard Jeep components.

Where the aftermarket rooftop tents bolt extra hardware including a heavy roof rack, the convenient design demonstrated in the figure offers an easy way out. The Wrangler’s removable panels get replaced by the roof tent, using the same mounting points rather than additional hardware.

The smart architecture avoids an extra bump to its roof, plus the tent remains accessible from inside the cabin without climbing outside the shell. Its convenient design remains practical, without compromising its gas figures.

The optional awning of the tent, when fully developed, features extra shade from extreme weather as well. Additionally, the tent’s cantilever design offers an extra leg room, by expanding the overall tent’s area.

The second patent allows the design to be implicated over several Jeep models, however the spotlight remains the off-road-focused Jeep Gladiator pickup truck. The “Off-Road Capable Trailer” is to source parts directly from the production models.

According to the publications on USPTO website, the off-road focused trailer might equip body and suspension components similar to a Jeep production model. Plus the documents also state that the trailer would use the same tires and axles as the production Jeep truck. 

However, in the “Background” part, Jeep highlights a difference from their off-road design, saying, trailers generally have a lower ground clearance and are more focused for smooth roads.

The documented patents do feature fascinating aspects, but that doesn’t provide specific numbers for its implications.
