- Mazda Reignites Rotary Dreams, Explores Sedans, Pickups, and More
Mazda could be gearing up for a bold return to its roots. CEO Masahiro Moro has revealed fresh interest in bringing back rotary engines—not just in sports cars, but across a variety of body styles, including pickups and sedans.
Speaking after the overwhelmingly positive response to the Iconic SP concept—a two-rotor rotary-powered vehicle showcased at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show—Moro said the buzz led him to reopen Mazda’s rotary engine development group. “I got an unbelievable reaction,” Moro shared. “That was great encouragement.”
While meeting emissions standards in the U.S. and Europe remains a hurdle, Mazda’s engineers have made significant strides over the past year. Moro remains optimistic, calling recent progress “very encouraging.”
Thanks to its compact size, the rotary engine could be adapted across Mazda’s lineup. “It’s the only engine we can install in any project,” Moro said. Potential applications range from a second sports car to a possible return to sporty sedans—a segment Moro believes still has loyal fans.
Moro also hinted at using Mazda’s straight-six engine in future models and acknowledged the growing push for electrification, which may influence future design platforms.
As for pickups, Mazda hasn’t offered one in the U.S. since 2009. However, Moro admitted it’s on his radar. “Pickup trucks are good for many people,” he said, noting a small truck could expand Mazda’s market presence—possibly through collaboration with other automakers.
While nothing is confirmed, Mazda’s future lineup could look far more exciting than its current SUV-heavy range.
